Breast reduction in Bangalore

When I assess someone for a breast reduction, the first thing I look at isn't breast size — it's how the breasts are affecting daily life. Back, neck and shoulder pain; grooves from bra straps; rashes in the fold beneath the breast; not being able to exercise comfortably. For the right patient, it's one of the most rewarding operations I perform.

Quick summary

  • Breast reduction removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin, reshapes and lifts the breast, and moves the nipple to a natural height.
  • It is usually done for physical symptoms — back, neck and shoulder pain, strap grooves, rashes under the breast.
  • Performed under general anaesthesia and takes about 2–3 hours.
  • Most patients return to desk work in 2–3 weeks; heavy lifting and exercise wait until 6 weeks; the shape settles over 3–6 months.
  • Cost starts from ₹2,30,000 in Bangalore and about AED 35,000 in Dubai. Insurance occasionally covers it when medically necessary.

Is it right for you?

You're likely to be a good candidate if your breasts cause chronic physical symptoms and your weight has been stable for at least six months. The clearest signs:

  • Chronic upper back, neck or shoulder pain.
  • Deep grooves in the shoulder skin from bra straps.
  • Rashes or skin breakdown in the fold beneath the breast.
  • Difficulty exercising or finding clothes that fit.

When to wait

  • Planning a pregnancy soon? Pregnancy can change the breasts significantly again.
  • Actively losing weight? Reach a stable point first.
  • Smoking has to stop well before surgery — it is the biggest single risk to wound healing.

Techniques

Vertical · "lollipop"

Moderate reductions

A scar around the areola and down to the breast fold. Less scarring, and well suited to moderate reductions.

Inverted-T · "anchor"

Larger reductions

Adds a scar along the breast fold. Gives better control of shape when a lot of tissue is removed.

The technique follows your anatomy and how much tissue needs to come out. Realistic scar positions are shown at consultation, so there are no surprises.

On the day

Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia given by a dedicated anaesthesiologist, and takes about 2–3 hours. Excess tissue, fat and skin are removed, the breast is reshaped, and the nipple and areola are moved up to a natural height on the new breast mound.

You wake up in a supportive surgical bra, which you'll wear for several weeks, and you're monitored until discharge. Lifting anything more than a few kilograms is avoided at first.

Recovery, step by step

  1. Days 1–3

The most uncomfortable phase: swelling, tightness and some bruising, managed with painkillers. Supportive bra day and night.

  2. Week 2

Most patients feel genuinely comfortable around the two-week mark.

  3. Weeks 2–3

Return to desk work and light daily activity.

  4. Week 6

Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise can resume.

  5. Months 3–6

Swelling settles and the final shape appears. The scars keep fading over 12–18 months.

Results

Lighter, lifted breasts in proportion with your frame — and, for most patients, relief from the pain and skin problems that brought them in. The shape you see at six months is the shape that stays, although pregnancy, weight change and ageing will still affect the breasts over time.

Breastfeeding may be affected after a reduction; if you plan a family, discuss it at consultation. Results vary between individuals.

Risks & safety

Expected: scars, which fade considerably over 12–18 months but don't disappear, and temporary changes in nipple sensation, which usually return over weeks to months. Swelling and bruising are normal.

Possible: asymmetry between the two sides, changes in nipple sensation that persist, effects on breastfeeding, and wound-healing problems, especially in smokers.

Uncommon but more serious: infection, significant bleeding, and problems with the blood supply to the nipple. Anaesthesia risks are reviewed before surgery.

Cost in Bangalore & Dubai

Breast reduction · Bangalore
From ₹2,30,000

Includes the surgeon's fee, anaesthesia and facility. A moderate vertical reduction sits at the lower end; a larger or more complex reduction moves higher.

Dubai · indicative
From AED 35,000

For surgery at Cocoona Clinic or Dubai London Hospital. Your quote is confirmed at consultation; 5% VAT applies in the UAE.

What moves the number

  • Technique — vertical or anchor.
  • How much tissue is removed.
  • Facility — clinic theatre or multi-specialty hospital.
  • Anaesthesia time.

In India, health insurance occasionally covers breast reduction when it is documented as medically necessary — chronic pain or postural problems — with pre-authorisation. Check with your insurer first.

Questions patients ask

Am I a candidate for breast reduction?

You're likely a candidate if your breasts cause chronic physical symptoms — back, neck or shoulder pain, bra-strap grooves, rashes under the breast or difficulty exercising — and your weight has been stable for at least six months. Pregnancy plans, ongoing weight loss and smoking affect timing, so they're discussed at consultation.

How much does breast reduction cost in Bangalore?

Breast reduction with Dr Sanjog in Bangalore starts from ₹2,30,000, including surgeon's fee, anaesthesia and facility. A larger or more complex reduction, or a hospital setting, moves the figure higher. In Dubai it starts from about AED 35,000.

Does insurance cover breast reduction in India?

Sometimes. Indian health insurance occasionally covers breast reduction when it is documented as medically necessary — chronic pain, postural problems or confirmed physical symptoms. It needs a clear medical record and pre-authorisation from your insurer, so check before assuming the whole cost is out of pocket.

How long is recovery after breast reduction?

Most patients return to desk work and light activity within two to three weeks. You wear a supportive bra for several weeks, and heavy lifting and strenuous exercise wait until about six weeks. The final shape appears as swelling settles over three to six months.

Will I have scars?

Yes. A vertical reduction leaves a scar around the areola and down to the breast fold; an anchor reduction adds one along the fold. Scars fade considerably over 12–18 months but don't disappear. Their likely position is shown to you at consultation.

Will I lose nipple sensation?

Temporary changes in nipple sensation are common and usually recover over weeks to months. In some patients the change lasts longer. Breastfeeding can also be affected. If you're planning a family, discuss this at consultation, because it may affect the timing and the technique.

How much smaller can my breasts be made?

The aim is proportion rather than a particular cup size — a breast that suits your frame and relieves your symptoms. How much tissue is removed depends on your anatomy, blood supply and goals, and the plan is agreed with you before surgery.

Is breast reduction safe?

It is a well-established operation, but like all surgery it carries risk: scarring, sensation changes, asymmetry and, less commonly, infection, bleeding or healing problems. Smoking is the biggest avoidable risk factor. A full assessment and a qualified anaesthesiologist are part of every case.
