Body contouring after weight loss

Losing a large amount of weight — with Ozempic, Mounjaro, bariatric surgery or sheer effort — changes the body in ways the scale doesn't show. Skin that has been stretched for years doesn't spring back, and liposuction can't fix that. Removing and re-draping the skin can. When to operate, and in what order, matters as much as the operations themselves.

Quick summary

  • Wait until your weight has been stable for at least 3–6 months — including after GLP-1 medicines — and your nutrition has recovered.
  • Loose skin needs skin-removal surgery: tummy tuck or belt lipectomy, arm lift, thigh lift, and breast lift or reduction. Liposuction alone can make loose skin look worse.
  • Extensive loose skin is usually treated in two or more stages, several months apart, with the abdomen typically first.
  • South Asian skin has a higher risk of thick or dark scars, so incision placement and scar care are planned in advance.
  • Cost depends on which procedures you need and how they are staged: each operation is quoted separately, in Bangalore or Dubai.

Is it right for you?

You're likely ready for body contouring when:

  • Your weight has been stable for at least three to six months — longer after bariatric surgery — so the loose skin you see is what surgery needs to treat.
  • Your nutrition has recovered. Appetite suppression on GLP-1 medicines can leave protein and micronutrient gaps that slow healing; these are checked first.
  • Your BMI is in a safe range for elective surgery (generally under 30), and you don't smoke.
  • You accept the trade: longer scars in exchange for a better contour and more comfort.

A formal referral from a bariatric team isn't required, but close communication with them about your nutrition and medical history is advisable.

Procedures

Abdomen

Tummy tuck or belt lipectomy

Removes the lower abdominal apron and repairs separated muscles; extends around the flanks and back when the excess is circumferential. Usually the first stage. Tummy tuck

Arms

Arm lift (brachioplasty)

Removes hanging skin from the upper arms. The scar runs along the inner arm, hidden with the arm at your side. Desk work in 10–14 days; no strenuous arm use for 6 weeks.

Thighs

Thigh lift

Inner thigh lift through the groin crease — sometimes with a vertical extension — or an outer thigh lift as part of a body lift. Desk work in 2–3 weeks; compression for 6–8 weeks.

Breast & chest

Breast lift, reduction or male chest

Reshapes and lifts breasts that have emptied and dropped, or treats loose chest skin in men. Breast reduction · Gynecomastia

After pregnancy

Mommy makeover

A tummy tuck with a breast lift or augmentation, and liposuction, in one session when it can be done safely — generally under six hours. Planned once your family is complete.

Fat, not skin

Liposuction

Only for residual fat where the skin is still firm. On its own, it can worsen loose skin after major weight loss. Liposuction

On the day

Every plan starts with a map of which areas bother you most and how much can be done safely in one operation. The abdomen usually comes first, because abdominal skin excess causes the most discomfort and skin problems. Arms, thighs and breasts follow in later stages once the first has healed.

Combining too many skin-removal procedures in one session increases anaesthetic time and complication risk, so combined sessions are kept within safe limits. Nutrition is optimised beforehand, and clot prevention is part of every plan.

Recovery, step by step

  1. Weeks 1–2

Rest, early walking and compression. Drains may be used depending on the procedure.

  2. Weeks 2–3

Return to desk work for most procedures — arm lifts often sooner, at 10–14 days.

  3. Weeks 6–8

Compression ends and full activity resumes, depending on the area treated.

  4. Months 3–6

Swelling settles. The next stage, if planned, is usually scheduled once you have fully healed.

  5. Months 12–18

Scars mature and fade. Their final appearance depends on your skin type and scar care.

Results

A firmer, more proportionate contour, clothes that fit, and relief from the rashes and chafing that loose skin causes. The scars are the price of that change — placed where clothing hides them where possible, but they are lifelong.

The result lasts as long as your weight stays stable; significant regain stretches the remaining skin again. Results vary between individuals.

Risks & safety

Surgery after major weight loss carries a higher risk profile than the same operation in someone who hasn't lost weight. The main risks are wound-healing problems, seroma (fluid collection), blood clots (DVT or pulmonary embolism), infection, asymmetry and numbness.

South Asian skin (Fitzpatrick III–V) has a higher risk of hypertrophic scarring and darkening at incision sites, which is managed with technique and structured scar care. Nutritional deficits increase the risk of poor healing, which is why they're corrected first.

Careful selection, staging, nutrition and clot prevention bring these risks to an acceptable level in suitable candidates. Your personal risks are assessed before any plan is agreed.

Cost in Bangalore & Dubai

Bangalore · per procedure
Quoted per procedure

There is no single figure: a tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift or breast procedure each differ in theatre time and how much skin comes out. Every operation in your plan is quoted separately, so you know the cost of each stage before you commit to any of it.

Dubai · per procedure
Quoted per procedure

Surgery at Cocoona Clinic or Dubai London Hospital; each procedure is quoted at consultation, and 5% VAT applies in the UAE.

What moves the number

  • Which areas, and how many stages.
  • Extent of skin removal in each area.
  • Combined procedures in one session, within safe time limits.
  • Facility and anaesthesia time.

Why patients choose Dr Sanjog

  • A staged plan built around safety, not the number of areas done in one go.
  • Experience with GLP-1 and post-bariatric patients, including nutrition checks before surgery.
  • Scar planning for South Asian skin.
  • The surgeon you meet is the surgeon who operates.
  • Bangalore or Dubai — so patients in South India don't need to travel abroad, and UAE patients can choose either city.

Questions patients ask

How long after weight loss should I wait before body contouring surgery?

Wait until your weight has been stable for at least three to six months — longer after bariatric surgery. This makes sure the loose skin is what surgery needs to treat and that further change won't undo the result. Nutrition, especially protein, should also be optimised before surgery.

Can I have body contouring after Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro?

Yes. The same stability rule applies: your weight should be steady for three to six months after GLP-1 weight loss. Appetite suppression can leave protein and micronutrient deficits that slow healing, so nutrition is assessed first. Surgery is planned for the thinner, less elastic skin these patients often have.

Which procedure should I have first?

The abdomen is usually treated first, because abdominal skin excess tends to cause the most discomfort, chafing and rashes. Once it has healed, arms, thighs and breasts can be planned in later stages. The order is personalised to what bothers you most and what can be done safely.

Can liposuction remove loose skin after weight loss?

No. Liposuction removes fat but doesn't tighten or remove skin. After losing 15–40 kg, the main problem is usually loose skin rather than fat, and liposuction alone can make it look worse. Skin-removal procedures such as a tummy tuck, arm lift or thigh lift are needed.

Will I need more than one operation?

Usually, if loose skin affects several areas. Combining too many skin-removal procedures in one session increases anaesthetic time and complication risk, so most patients have two or more stages spaced several months apart. Staging improves safety and the final result.

How much does body contouring after weight loss cost?

It depends on which procedures you need and how many stages they take. A tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift and breast surgery are each quoted separately, in Bangalore or Dubai, and a staged plan is quoted stage by stage — so you know what each operation costs before committing to the next. Your figures follow consultation.

Is body contouring safe for South Asian skin?

Yes, but South Asian skin carries a higher risk of thick or darkened scars at incision sites. Incisions are placed and closed with this in mind, and a structured scar-care plan follows surgery. The likely scar positions are shown to you before you decide.

What happens if I regain weight after surgery?

Significant weight regain stretches the remaining skin and can undo part of the contour. Keeping your weight stable after surgery is the single most important thing you can do to preserve the result.
